Joann Fabrics has been a beloved institution for crafters and sewists since 1943, serving as one of the last in-person sources for fashion fabrics, sewing tools, and materials. With the news that Joann’s is closing all its stores, the sewing community is facing a major shift—one that will have a ripple effect on alterations, especially for wedding gown let-outs, bridesmaid dress let outs, and formalwear alterations.

What This Means for You and Me

For us at Saylor Sewing, the closure means we must plan ahead for both the expected and unexpected alterations that come our way. While we have stocked up on essential supplies since Joann’s first filed for bankruptcy, there are still challenges ahead—especially for last-minute dress let-outs, zipper replacements, and hems in unusual colors.

Here’s what you need to know and how you can prepare to avoid delays and extra costs.

Challenges in Sourcing Fabrics & Supplies

1. Fabric for Let Outs

If your wedding gown, bridesmaid dress, or prom dress is too small and needs to be let out, we often need to source matching fabric. Without Joann’s as a local option, this now means:

  • Ordering fabric swatches online before placing an order.

  • Extra time for color matching and shipping (this process can take 4–6 weeks before alterations can even begin).

  • Increased costs due to swatch orders, shipping fees, and potential fabric minimums.

  • Increased costs and order time due to tariffs.

Solution: If you suspect a let-out is needed, reach out to us as early as possible. Ordering fabric through the dress shop or designer is usually the best option. If that’s not possible, using fabric from another dress—such as extra material from a bridesmaid’s hem—can be a lifesaver.

2. Zipper Replacements

We carry a variety of white and ivory zippers in different lengths and styles, but we do not stock a wide range of colors. If your bridesmaid dress or prom dress zipper is damaged, replacing it in the correct color could take an extra week or more due to ordering time.

Solution: Don’t wait until the last minute to have your zipper replaced. The sooner we know, the sooner we can source the right materials.

3. Matching Thread for Alterations

While we stock over 42 different thread colors, we rely on a 150-color thread chart for specialty shades. This means if your dress is an uncommon color, we may need to order thread—adding time to the alteration process.

Solution: Schedule your fitting early! Even if you’re waiting on weight loss or other body changes (whether you’re growing, pregnant, nursing, or on Ozempic), book a consultation in advance so we can prepare for last-minute adjustments.

How to Avoid Sizing & Fabric Sourcing Issues

Since local fabric shopping will no longer be an option, here are some proactive steps you can take when ordering formalwear:

1. Get Professionally Measured Before Ordering

Sizing varies drastically between brands. If you’re purchasing online, get measured by a professional before placing an order. We offer affordable professional measurements and can help you determine the best size.

2. Order Extra Sizes if Possible

If the retailer has a reasonable return policy, order multiple sizes—your usual size, one size up, and one size down. This ensures a better fit and minimizes the need for major alterations.

3. Use Fabric from the Designer or Another Dress

If a let out is unavoidable:

  • Order extra fabric directly from the designer when purchasing your dress.

  • Bridesmaids: Ask the shortest member of your bridal party who had their dress hemmed—they likely have the most leftover fabric.

4. Consider a Corset Conversion

For wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses, a corset back can be a great alternative to letting out a dress. We can source pre-made corsets, available in 23 colors, though fabric options are limited.

Final Thoughts

The closing of Joann Fabrics is a major loss for the sewing and alterations community. As much as we love working magic with your gowns, our ability to do last-minute fixes will be affected by this change.

To avoid unexpected delays and stress, plan ahead, order wisely, and reach out to professionals before making formalwear purchases. We are always here to help guide you through the process and ensure your gown fits beautifully for your special day!
